Designer Profile

Hearing a client say,“Karla, what I like most about working with you is your 'Can Do' attitude, your knowledge and eye for quality along with your total professionalism", I understood that it was a pivotal moment because being professional along with making my clients happy is a goal I constantly strive for as a designer.

In 1982, I started my business, Interior Decisions, with a philosophy that compassion, integrity and creativity would be the basis of my future. Design is a collaborative experience between designer and client and I work closely with my clients to create timeless and beautifully designed spaces that enhance their life, career and overall sense of well-being.

The complete vision, from conceptual design to the last accessory is a standard here at Interior Decisions. Expanding our capabilities to work in unison with architects, project managers and contractors help us to achieve beautiful; functional living and working spaces. Whether a private home, executive office, an elegant restaurant or a stately country club, we bring a level of class, style and detail our clients appreciate.

Our designs include many residential and commercial interiors throughout the U.S., i.e., projects in the Trump Parc Apartments and Trump Tower in New York City, as well as homes in Texas, Arizona, Florida, Long Island, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Commercial projects include Il Capriccio Ristorante in Whippany, NJ, Brooklake Country Club in Florham Park, Essex Fells Country Club in Essex Fells, Romantico’s Restaurant in Randolph, NJ and Mr. K’s, a notable Manhattan Asian restaurant on 51st and Lexington in one of the Rockefeller Center historic Art Deco buildings.

Graduating Magna Cum Laude with a BFA degree in Interior Design from Kean University inspired me to work hard, get experience and begin my own practice. Becoming an Allied Member of NJ Chapter of ASID has brought me recognition within a respected and recognized national interior design organization as well as the ability to network with peers and other professionals. As an active member of NJ ASID and serving as a Board of Trustee member through the years, I regularly participate in continuing education programs along with the annual ASID Trade Show to stay on the cutting edge of new products in design. Understanding the importance of design and the community inspired me to volunteer as the Co Chairman of the Community Service Hospice Project committee for the renovation of two hospice hospitals wards for St. Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Centers; an ongoing ASID community service project. In 2006, I was qualified me as a Certified Interior Designer by the N.J. Board of Architects and in the same year, became a NJ Licensed Home Improvement Contractor.

I am also a proud recipient of the ASID Design Excellence Awards for winning designs including: two GOLD Awards, three SILVER Awards and three BRONZE awards.

My interiors have been published in Garden State Home and Garden Magazine, New Jersey Good Life Magazine, Woman’s Day Decorator Special Issue, DESIGN NJ Magazine, AT HOME magazine, HOME Magazine, NJ Home and Style Magazine, New York Spaces Magazine, Beautiful Baths, NJ Savvy Living, Park Place Magazine, NJ Countryside magazine, Millburn Short Hills Magazine, Montclair Magazine, Morris Home and Health Magazine, Aspire Magazine and Home Theater Magazine as well as features in home and design articles including The New York Times HOME SECTION.

Publications also include ten table books: ‘Urban Style” (Publications International); “Dramatic Makeovers, Before and After Kitchens and Baths’, ‘European Inspired Kitchens’, “Country Kitchens”, “Show Houses 1 a Decorator Tour”, “Show House 2 a Decorator Tour” and “Show Houses 3, A Decorator Tour” all by Schiffer Publications as well as “Designed in New Jersey”, a compilation of New Jersey ASID designers and their spaces by DSA Publishing.

In May, 2007 I participated in the Stately Homes by The Sea Designer Show House in Rumson, NJ. designing “Jackie’s Retreat” a room inspired by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Other Show Houses include, Mansion in May 2008, The Fro Heim Estate in Far Hills, NJ, where two bathrooms were designed and renovated to benefit Morristown Memorial Hospital. In October 2008 for another show house, I planned and designed a Home Cinema along with a “Green” Powder Room and Laundry Room for Twin Maples Centennial Show House benefiting Overlook Hospital Cancer Wing and Summit Fortnightly Club which was featured on NBC TV -OPEN HOUSE NEW YORK’ in November 2008 for the eco friendly ‘Green’ aspects of the Laundry Room and Bath. In May 2010, for the MANSION IN MAY Designer Show house in Morristown, NJ a master suite was designed and inspired by Grace Kelly, one of my favorites. In addition, DESIGN NJ Magazine, published our town house renovation project and featured it as the cover photo and 9 pages within of photos and editorial for December 2009/January 2010 issue: http://www.designnewjersey.com/features/current.cfm
