Designer Profile

My goal is to create sophisticated interiors that satisfy the needs of my clients and please their senses. Whether I am creating an environment to live in or work in, the result must have style, comfort and utility.

To quote a recent commercial client: “I love coming to work now. It makes me feel good!”

Building on an educational background that encompasses interior design, architecture and art history, Steven M. Levy, ASID has developed a skill set that enables him to approach interior design from both a functional and an aesthetic perspective. As the owner of SMI Interior Design, Mr. Levy believes that the most successful interiors are collaborations between client and designer. To this end, he listens, guides, and shares his knowledge to form a client/designer alliance that carries through from the initial concept to project completion. Whether the project is residential or commercial, a renovation or new construction, he draws on his training in both architecture and interior design to evaluate it from a functional, aesthetic and conceptual standpoint. His goal is to move the process forward to the right solution for the client and the circumstances. He is conversant in a wide range of design signatures, from Louis XIV to Bauhaus, from English traditional to Art Deco, from Victorian to post-modern, so that the end product is a reflection of the tastes and needs of the client.
Mr. Levy holds a masters degree in architecture from the University of Pennsylvania and a bachelor’s degree in art history from Boston University, as well as additional interior design courses at Parsons School of Interior Design in New York City.

He is recognized for his expertise in lighting design and employs this knowledge to impart drama to his interiors without sacrificing their functional requirements. As a respected teacher, he has shared this knowledge with design students at several New Jersey educational institutions.

During his tenure as president of the New Jersey Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers, he served as a frequent and articulate spokesperson for the chapter. He has been featured in numerous publications throughout New Jersey, including Savvy Living, The Record, The Daily Record, The Star Ledger, Business News of New Jersey and Hunterdon Life.

BEDROOM
Soft lavender tie-back draperies with a cutwork face set the tone for a restful bedroom with custom-made, aniline-dyed veneer dresser and night tables. The upholstered Italian bed provides additional storage underneath. Artwork from the client’s collection and light fixtures that echo the dining room chandelier punctuate the space.

DEN
Through careful attention to balance and scale, a room that is barely 11' wide now has the illusion of a more generous space. The built-in wall unit with its ends angled to accommodate the door opening is perfectly proportioned so the homeowners can simultaneously enjoy the fireplace and the television. Custom sofa and chairs are enhanced by granite tables that float on iron legs while subtle patterns in fabrics, wall covering and carpet add warmth and texture.

LIVING ROOM
To reconcile a sophisticated Bauhaus aesthetic with an 1870s Victorian home, the designer came up with an ingenious solution: Connecting the corners of the living room and parlor established an eleven-and-a-half degree angle. The furniture and the lighting now run parallel to this grid, reinforcing the idea that a “modern” interior resides within the space but is not actually part of the Victorian structure. PARLOR
A sophisticated urban aesthetic is skillfully incorporated into this Victorian era home. The parlor’s custom wall unit, curved and angled to fit snugly into the shape of the room, is a twin to one in the living room across the hall. A leather double recliner and custom-colored carpet add a punch of color. Photographer: Peter Rymwid
DINING ROOM
With a pale gray limestone flooring, glass-topped credenza and table, and navy leather chairs, this dining room evokes an ocean-side tranquility. Through consistent choices in flooring, wall treatments, furniture finishes and drapery fabrics, the designer created a harmonious relationship between this room and the adjacent living room and parlor.

An authentic California painted lady color scheme celebrates the home’s Victorian pedigree while the oversized numbers on the front door indicate that there are some surprises inside. The designer researched the selection of the five colors and their specific placement on the home’s exterior.
In a one-of-a-kind 1960s home, the designer created a living room that complements the integrity of the original architecture and embraces the client’s preference for contemporary surroundings and uncluttered spaces. Horizontally laid fieldstone, transforms a dated white brick fireplace into a stunning focal point. Cove lighting, maple paneling, custom designed furniture and carpeting, and a subtle palette of whites, black and neutrals create a timeless, Zen-like space.
To transform an under-utilized family room, the designer created a comfortable space with a stunning fireplace and a carefully conceived lighting plan that is key to its new flexibility. Now children can play and the whole family can relax and watch television in a room that will also accommodate the overflow for large holiday gatherings. The sideboard is an elegant solution for toy storage, while the roman shades strike the perfect balance between casual and classic.
