Designer Profile

"My approach to Interior Design is organic. It's rooted in my belief that people are deeply impacted by their surroundings, all of the time. If we experience the places we live and work as invigorating, fluid, and comfortable, we'll take that state-of-being with us wherever we go. ....." says Jeffrey Brooks.

Jeff began his career in design as teenager. A student of the visual arts, at 19 years old, Brook's paintings were already being exhibited at galleries in New York, Philadelphia, and New Jersey.
Winning a national design competition for furniture, he was inspired to focus on the decorative arts and interiors. Attending classes at the New School in New York City was the next step toward a dynamic career.

"In my Junior year I was offered a position with John Mc Keon Interiors in Philadelphia. The opportunity was too good to pass up so I relocated to Philadelphia"

Brooks learned from the ground up. Drawing, planning, and presenting to clients were among his responsibilities. A strong color sense became a hallmark of his projects. And, the practical points involved in running a design project formed a valuable education.

To round out his knowledge of the "nuts and bolts", he worked as Merchandise director for a national retailer of fine furniture and design. Jeff travels to markets in Milan, Paris, and all over the U.S. in search of the best quality at the most resonable cost.

"I'm proudest of the fact that many of my clients have called on me for new projects many times over. Referrals are the life blood of a design practice so it's a great compliment to get requests from the family and friends of the people I've worked with."

A few notes from Jeff's clients..............

"Dear Jeff, John and I were talking the other day and I had to send you a quick note. We see just how much thought you put into anticipating our needs. You and the team have turned a bunch of plain boxes (rooms) into the gorgeous, comfortable home we'd hoped for. We're still discovering how easy it is live here. Thanks........." Mrs. P.W., New York City, NY

"Hi, Because of the way our former house was done, we realized probably $40,000.00 more when it sold than we would have if you hadn't designed it for us. Let's talk next week and make a date for you to see the new place.............." Mrs. W.S., Bernardsville, NJ

The Gallery/Entry of a New York City home.
City Living Room. The screen is Ca.1928. Painted scene of Paris done over sliver leafing so it shimmers.
When I'm looking at a living room, I see the people who will inhabit it and how they'd move, where they'd sit, and how they'd feel.
The Dining Room of a Mendham, New Jersey client. The cabinet is pretty wild. It's chinoisere from the late 1800's. They are crazy for the color of the walls and window treatments.
Manhattan Dining Room with River and Skyline views. The built-in cabinets are also windows between the Living Room and Dining Room.
User friendly but still a little formal... was my client's wish.
This Kitchen was carved out of what had been four small rooms. Venetian plastered ceilings reflect natural light through the space. Wall tiles in celery colored glass and floors in concrete tortoise shell. Cabinets were built from scratch in Mahogany, Wavy Makore, and Wenge with stainless steel banding.
Kitchens, like every other room, work best when they are well organized and thoughtful. Because this Kitchen is open to the Breakfast area and Family Room, we kept the cabinets, refinished them in sepia tones and brought out the Family Room feeling. Linen, stone and iron helped.
Country Kitchen speaks French. I made the most of the small workspace by installing a deep penninsula with storage underneath. Window shades in burlap and gros grain.
This Master Bedroom in the city holds a bed of my design upholstered in cashmere and accented with ivory coins. The ceiling fixture is from Donghia.
A Master Bedroom in the Somerset Hills. This is a great example of meeting the client's wish to use some of their existing furniture, preserving the Traditional look, while freshening it up
and lending the room a more current attitude. Above the head of the bed I framed a dowery embroidery dating to the 1700's and used the indigo and green colors to make the vaulted ceiling a lot less of a void. Altogether this suite is now clean, comfortable and personal.
Rooms that serve more than one obvious function are the best and most lived-in. In place of a bedside chest I installed a writing desk and comfortable antique chair.
Kitchen
Before the renovation, the sunken tub went unused. Now with the addition of the screen and a few well chosen pieces, it has become a place to relax and look out at the gardens. Kool!
For this Breakfast Room space a pair of tall wine coolers are wrapped in cabinetry. Instead of a wall, they divide the Breakfast Room from the Family Lounge. On the other side a Television floats above the floor. The Dining Table is my own design. It can expand to seat 12 or contract to seat four.
Designer Show house, Collectors' room.
The dining room is a powerfully intimate place. The most important people in our lives break bread with us and make lasting connections.
Art, its selection and placement, is key in a home. Placement can be inventive.
When it comes to artwork, the provenance is less important to me than its value in the client's heart.
The exciting part of the job is drawing inspiration out of the client and bringing it to life.
We are always listening. In this case, not only to the goals of the business owners but to the story of a 200-plus year-old barn that had fallen into ruin. We preserved and reclaimed most of the original structure and brought it back to life.
